The Kilmacud Crokes All Ireland Hurling 7s tournament, now in its 44th year and sponsored by Applegreen was another action packed exhibition of skill with the hurl and sliotar.
A strong contingent of Munster and Leinster clubs contested the knockout stages including last year’s winners and hosts Kilmacud Crokes who lost out to Connacht club Beagh in the quarter-finals. The semi-final pairings saw the impressive Galway team overcome Clare side Wolfe Tones to set up a final decider against another team from the Banner County, Whitegate. The Whitegate players put in a strong second half against fancied Tipperary outfit Portroe in their semi-final, outscoring their opponents by 4 points in that period to claim a 2-point win.
In a competitive and skilful final, it was the Galway men who secured the All Ireland Club Hurling 7s title to kickstart an impressive trilogy for the Tribesmen with their county minors and seniors securing All Ireland honours at Croke Park the following day.
Leading by 4 points at the break Beagh withstood a strong fight back from their Clare opponents with goalkeeper Stephen Diviney outstanding throughout and their forwards Joey Gantley and kevin Keehan clinical on the break to win on a final scoreline of 5-17 (32pts) v 1-22 (25pts).
